Weija-Gbawe MP Demands Urgent Action on Crumbling Accra-Kasoa Highway

Traffic Crisis on Major Accra Route

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has urgently appealed to government to repair the Mallam-Weija section of the Accra-Kasoa Highway, citing severe congestion and poor road conditions that trap commuters in traffic for up to four hours daily. The deteriorating road surface, combined with flooding issues and slow progress on a storm drain project, has made one of Ghana's busiest routes nearly impassable during peak hours.

Motorists travelling from Kasoa and the Central Region towards Accra face the worst delays between Atala, Weija Junction and Mallam Junction. Mr Shaib highlighted the human cost of the crisis, recounting how a surgeon at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital spent nearly three hours stuck in traffic whilst patients waited for his assistance. Such delays threaten both productivity and public health in the capital region.

Slow Progress on Infrastructure Work

The MP blamed the ongoing storm drain project for contributing significantly to the traffic nightmare, stating that work has progressed at a snail's pace despite multiple interventions. He revealed that the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources has visited the site several times and instructed contractors to accelerate work, but improvements remain elusive. Mr Shaib questioned whether funding or resource constraints were hampering completion of the critical drainage infrastructure.

Earlier road repairs undertaken by the MP himself have been undermined by recurring floods and what he suspects are engineering defects in the original design. The Minister for Roads and Highways acknowledged the problem after receiving photographic and video evidence but concrete action remains pending.

Thousands Depend on This Route

Mr Shaib made an impassioned plea for swift government intervention, describing the situation as critical for the thousands of commuters who rely on this corridor daily. He stressed that fixing the Mallam-Weija section would ease travel not only for Weija-Gbawe residents but also for the broader population moving between Accra, Kasoa and the Central Region.
