Ashanti Minister Halts Suspected Mining Operations Near Lake Bosomtwe Pending Investigation

Concerns over illegal mining near Lake Bosomtwe have prompted swift intervention from the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who has confirmed that suspected mining operations close to the ecologically sensitive lake have been suspended whilst investigations are conducted.

The controversy erupted after Kumasi-based social activist Kwaku Okyere Darko shared photographs on social media appearing to show excavation work taking place in the vicinity of the lake — Ghana's only natural lake and a site of immense environmental, cultural and tourism significance.

The individual identified as being at the centre of the matter, Richard Antwi, has reportedly claimed that he legally acquired the land in question and holds the required authorisation to carry out operations there. However, Dr. Amoakohene stressed that these claims remain unverified and that investigators are working to establish whether the necessary mining permits were obtained and whether traditional authorities sanctioned the use of the land.

Environmental Stakes Are High

Environmental advocates have long cautioned that any mining activity near Lake Bosomtwe could cause irreversible harm to its ecosystem, biodiversity and the surrounding communities that depend on tourism and fishing. The lake attracts researchers, visitors and local businesses, making its preservation a matter of broad public interest.

The images shared online triggered widespread calls for government action, reigniting a national conversation about the escalating threat of galamsey to water bodies and protected areas across the country. No charges have been announced against the suspected operator as yet, with officials indicating that further action will depend on the outcome of ongoing investigations.

Operations at the site remain halted as government agencies work to determine whether any mining or environmental regulations were breached and what measures will be needed to protect the integrity of the Lake Bosomtwe ecosystem.
