Accra launches month-long free waste collection drive to tackle flooding and sanitation crisis

Free waste collection aims to prevent future flooding

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has launched a one-month free refuse collection programme across the capital city, targeting communities that have suffered from recent flooding. The initiative is designed to help residents dispose of accumulated waste without charge, addressing sanitation challenges that worsened during heavy rains that hit several parts of Accra in recent weeks.

Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey announced the scheme during visits to affected communities, where he assessed conditions on the ground. He identified poor waste management and blocked drainage systems as key factors that intensified flooding in the city. "We have observed significant waste build-up in affected communities, which contributed to flooding and poses environmental health risks," the mayor stated.

To support the exercise, the AMA has deployed sanitation officers across the metropolis to supervise waste collection and guide residents to designated disposal points. The Assembly has also set up a dedicated WhatsApp reporting line—054 491 4628—for residents to report sanitation issues and request swift action from the Assembly.

Officials believe the free collection programme will reduce environmental pollution, clear clogged drains, and improve public health. The AMA hopes the initiative will encourage residents to take greater responsibility for waste disposal and maintain cleaner surroundings as the rainy season continues.

The Assembly emphasised that sustained public cooperation is essential to prevent future flooding incidents and reduce sanitation-related diseases during the rainy period.
