Accra Floods: Church Members Trapped With Water at Neck Level in Alajo

Church members in Alajo, a suburb of Accra, have been left stranded inside a flooded building after heavy rains caused water levels to rise to neck height, with rescue teams from the Ghana National Fire Service scrambling to reach those trapped inside.

Alex King Nartey, a spokesperson for the Ghana National Fire Service, confirmed to JoyNews that firefighters were on the ground but facing extremely dangerous conditions. He noted that the church members had locked themselves inside the building, and the surrounding area was entirely submerged, making access nearly impossible without swimming.

"The floodwater was at neck level or even higher from where I could see. We are trying our best to get through to them, but it's not easy because the entire area is submerged," Mr. Nartey said.

He further revealed that emergency responders had been unable to make direct contact with those inside the church, adding that the Service was engaging its coordinating agencies to secure additional support, including possible assistance from the Navy.

"We are hoping there will be no casualties," Mr. Nartey said, describing the overall scene as frightening and stressing that the flooding had overwhelmed the entire Alajo community.

Rescue operations were still ongoing at the time of this report, as emergency personnel raced to prevent any loss of life. The flooding in Alajo is part of a wider pattern of heavy seasonal rains causing dangerous inundations across parts of the capital.
