Afienya Residents Trapped as Worst Flooding in 16 Years Submerges Accra Suburb

Hundreds of residents in Afienya, a suburb on the outskirts of Accra, found themselves trapped inside their homes on Monday, 29 June, after torrential overnight rains triggered severe flooding across the area.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to local media described scenes of widespread devastation, with floodwaters making roads and pathways completely impassable by early Monday morning, leaving many families with no means of evacuation or movement.

Habib Awudu Mohammed, a former Assembly Member for the area, described the flooding as unprecedented in recent memory, stating that Afienya had not experienced destruction on this scale in over 16 years.

The flooding has once again raised urgent questions about drainage infrastructure and flood management in fast-growing communities on the fringes of the capital, where rapid development has frequently been blamed for worsening the impact of seasonal rains.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the scale of damage or relief efforts under way. Residents have called on the government and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to respond swiftly and provide assistance to affected households.
