Afienya Floods: Hundreds Stranded as Overnight Rains Submerge Homes, NADMO Moves In
Hundreds of residents in Afienya, within the Greater Accra Region, have been left stranded in their homes after severe flooding swept through the community following heavy overnight rains on Sunday. The situation, described as extremely dire, has affected multiple neighbourhoods including the TOR Estate, Jerusalem, the Sanford Clinic area, and Ablekuma, among others.
The immediate past Assembly Member for the Afienya Electoral Area, Habib Awudu Mohammed, confirmed the extent of the damage to JoyNews on Monday morning. "It is true the whole area is flooded. The situation here is not easy; people are trapped in their rooms, they cannot move, they cannot do anything," he said, painting a grim picture of conditions on the ground.
Emergency response teams have since been deployed to the affected areas. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana National Fire Service have both mobilised personnel to carry out rescue operations. Mohammed confirmed their presence, noting: "We are doing our best to see how best we can rescue the people."
According to Mohammed, flooding of this scale has not been witnessed in Afienya in approximately 16 years, underscoring the unusual severity of Sunday night's rainfall and its aftermath.
The flooding has also caused significant disruption beyond the residential areas, with the main Afienya–Tema road experiencing heavy traffic congestion as commuters and motorists struggled to navigate the waterlogged routes.
