Accra Floods: Heavy Rains Swamp Major Roads and Homes Across the Capital

Heavy overnight rains have triggered severe flooding across several parts of the Greater Accra Region, stranding many residents in their homes and bringing Monday morning traffic to a near standstill. The downpour began late on Sunday, 28th June, and continued into the early hours of Monday, 29th June 2026, submerging roads and cutting off communities across the capital.

Which Areas Have Been Hardest Hit?

Floodwaters have been reported at numerous key locations, including the Atomic Roundabout in Madina, the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, sections of the N1 Highway, the Accra–Kasoa road, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, and surrounding communities. Motorists attempting to navigate the waterlogged routes have faced long queues, with some abandoning their vehicles or turning back entirely.

Beyond the roads, floodwaters have entered homes and shops in several low-lying and flood-prone communities. Residents scrambled to salvage furniture, goods, and personal belongings as water levels continued to rise through the morning.

Authorities Urge Caution

Officials have warned motorists and commuters to avoid flooded roads to minimise the risk of accidents and vehicle damage. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain vigilant and move to higher ground where necessary. Emergency personnel are expected to assess the full extent of the damage as the situation develops.

Accra's recurring flooding problem is widely attributed to a combination of inadequate drainage infrastructure, rampant illegal dumping of waste that blocks waterways, and rapid, often unplanned urban expansion. Despite repeated calls for long-term solutions, the capital continues to battle the same challenges with each major rainfall season.
