Accra Battles Flooding as Heavy Monday Morning Rains Inundate Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and Surrounding Areas
Several parts of Accra were left under water on Monday morning after heavy rainfall swept through the capital, causing widespread flooding that disrupted the movement of residents and road users alike.
The Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and a number of surrounding communities were among the worst-hit areas, according to accounts from residents and commuters who witnessed the scenes firsthand.
Road users reported significant delays and difficult driving conditions as floodwaters rose across key routes, with some vehicles struggling to navigate the waterlogged roads during what is typically a busy Monday morning commute.
Flooding in Accra during the rainy season is a recurring challenge, often linked to poor drainage infrastructure and the rapid expansion of built-up areas that reduce natural water absorption. Authorities have repeatedly called for improved urban drainage systems to address the problem.
Residents have urged city authorities, including the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), to take urgent and lasting steps to tackle the city's persistent flooding problem, warning that the situation poses serious risks to lives and property each time the rains arrive.
