Floodwaters Cut Off Accra–Kumasi Highway, Leaving Motorists Stranded

Severe flooding has brought one of Ghana's busiest intercity roads to a halt, with large stretches of the Accra–Kumasi highway submerged under floodwaters following heavy overnight rains. Motorists travelling in both directions have been left stranded in lengthy queues as rising water levels make it impossible to proceed safely.

According to JoyNews' Naa Morkor, the floodwaters effectively split the carriageway, cutting off movement along the critical route that connects the nation's capital to the Ashanti Region. Commuters have reported being stuck for several hours with no clear indication of when the road would reopen.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, speaking on JoyFM's Super Morning Show on Monday, confirmed that the rains were expected to persist until midday, in line with forecasts from meteorological authorities. He urged members of the public to prioritise their personal safety and avoid unnecessary travel during the period.

The minister also called on all emergency and security agencies to work in close coordination to protect lives and property as the flooding continues to affect communities along the route.

The disruption has highlighted ongoing concerns about the vulnerability of Ghana's road infrastructure to seasonal flooding, with the Accra–Kumasi highway being a vital economic corridor used daily by thousands of commuters, traders, and freight operators.
