Ghana demands justice after Ghanaian killed in Cape Town xenophobic attack
The Ghanaian Government has expressed deep concern following the death of a citizen during xenophobic violence in South Africa. Bashiru Isak, 40, was fatally shot in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Monday, June 30, during demonstrations targeting foreign nationals. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the killing as a senseless act of violence.
Ghana's High Commission in Pretoria has taken immediate action, formally protesting to South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation and filing a complaint with the South African Police Service. An autopsy has been conducted at Ghana's request, and arrangements are underway to repatriate Mr Isak's body for burial in Ghana.
The Ministry called on South African authorities to conduct a thorough, transparent and rapid investigation leading to arrests and prosecution. Ghana also urged the South African Government to strengthen protections for foreign nationals in affected communities and uphold its international obligations to guarantee the safety and dignity of all residents within its borders.
This incident underscores Ghana's broader concerns about the escalating wave of xenophobic attacks against African nationals in South Africa. The Government previously submitted a petition to the African Union Commission on the matter and expressed hope the continental body would prioritise it at upcoming meetings.
The Ministry advised Ghanaians in South Africa to remain vigilant, avoid high-risk areas and contact the Ghana High Commission's emergency lines if they face danger. Ghana reiterated its commitment to diplomatic and multilateral efforts to protect citizens abroad and prevent future attacks.
