Ghana Demands Justice After Ghanaian Shot Dead in South Africa Xenophobic Violence
Formal Protest Lodged with South African Authorities
Ghana's government has issued a strong condemnation following the fatal shooting of Bashiru Isak, a 40-year-old Ghanaian national, in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Monday, 30 June 2026. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on Wednesday expressing "profound shock and sadness" over the incident, which occurred during demonstrations linked to ongoing xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals across South Africa.
In response, the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has formally lodged a protest with South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation. The commission has also filed an official complaint with the South African Police Service after confirming Mr Isak's identity and notifying his family members.
Ghana Calls for Comprehensive Investigation
The Ghanaian government is demanding a comprehensive, transparent and expedited investigation into the killing. Ghana insists that South African authorities must identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible "without delay." The Ministry described the act as "senseless violence" and condemned "the rising tide of xenophobia targeting African nationals, including Ghanaians" in the country.
Beyond securing justice, Ghana has urged South African authorities to strengthen security measures protecting Ghanaian nationals and other foreign residents in vulnerable communities. The government emphasised the need for "enhanced protection for all Ghanaian nationals in affected communities" as xenophobic tensions persist in the region.
