Return Home Now: Akwatia MP Urges Ghanaians in South Africa Amid Rising Xenophobic Attacks

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia has issued a strong appeal to Ghanaians residing in South Africa, urging them to seriously consider returning to Ghana in the wake of escalating attacks targeting foreign nationals in that country.

The legislator argued that the current climate of violence and hostility directed at migrants in South Africa makes it increasingly difficult to justify continued settlement there. He stressed that the safety and wellbeing of Ghanaians abroad must take priority over economic pursuits in an environment that has grown deeply unwelcoming to foreigners.

South Africa has long struggled with periodic outbreaks of xenophobic violence, with African migrants — including Ghanaians, Nigerians, Zimbabweans and others — frequently bearing the brunt of attacks on homes, shops and businesses. These incidents have repeatedly drawn condemnation from across the continent and strained diplomatic relations between South Africa and several African nations.

The Akwatia MP's remarks reflect growing concern among Ghanaian officials and citizens about the vulnerability of the Ghanaian diaspora community in South Africa. Ghanaians have historically maintained a significant presence in the country, many of them engaged in trading, mining and other commercial activities.

His call comes as Ghana continues to encourage its citizens abroad to explore opportunities at home, particularly as the government pushes various economic development initiatives aimed at creating jobs and attracting diaspora investment back into the country.
