Private Schools Exempt From GES Graduation Ban, GNACOPS Clarifies
The Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) has clarified that the Ghana Education Service's directive suspending graduation ceremonies in pre-tertiary schools does not extend to private educational institutions.
The clarification follows confusion among private school owners and parents after the GES and Greater Accra Regional Education Directorate ordered public schools to halt planned graduation events. GNACOPS reviewed the legal and administrative basis of the directive and concluded it applies exclusively to schools under direct GES authority.
According to GNACOPS, privately owned schools are not expressly prevented from organising graduation or transition ceremonies. However, the Council advised member schools to conduct such events responsibly, keeping ceremonies simple and child-focused whilst adhering to regulatory requirements and avoiding unnecessary extravagance or displays of wealth.
GNACOPS reiterated its support for government initiatives promoting discipline and educational standards, whilst calling for stronger collaboration among education stakeholders. The Council emphasised the need for improved communication and clarity when policies affecting the education sector are introduced.
