Telecel Ghana's SME Month 2026 aims to transform informal businesses into sustainable enterprises

Telecel Ghana has unveiled its 2026 Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SME) Month, a strategic initiative designed to help Ghana's millions of informal business owners transition into sustainable, scalable enterprises. The campaign, themed "Connect to Growth: Unlock More," represents a deliberate shift from simply helping entrepreneurs start businesses to supporting them through the critical growth and sustainability phases.

The month-long initiative, led by Telecel Business, will deliver practical business support, digital solutions, and growth opportunities across Ghana, with a particular focus on skills development, technology adoption, market access, and professional networking. This comes against the backdrop of Ghana Statistical Service data showing the country had more than 2.6 million business establishments as of March 2026, with approximately 92 percent operating as informal micro-businesses with limited scale and sustainability.

Training, mentorship and digital transformation

A cornerstone of this year's SME Month is the Train-to-Scale initiative, developed in partnership with the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA). This free regional training programme will equip selected SME owners with practical skills in business management, mentorship, content creation, and Telecel Cash Merchant operations. The programme directly addresses the gap between informal, subsistence-level trading and professional business operations capable of serving larger markets.

Central to Telecel's support is The Boss Plan, a specially designed product for SMEs featuring high-volume, non-expiry data and voice bundles alongside integrated customer outreach and SMS marketing tools. As businesses grow, they require more reliable connectivity and digital infrastructure to reach customers, manage operations efficiently, and compete effectively. The Boss Plan attempts to consolidate these needs into a single solution.

The campaign will also feature The CEOs Unscripted with Delay, a public conversation series where successful business founders discuss the realities of scaling enterprises, including the mistakes, setbacks, technology decisions, and growth strategies that shaped their journeys. Such dialogues are valuable for aspiring entrepreneurs seeking practical insights beyond theoretical business education.

Why it matters for Ghana

Ghana's economic development increasingly depends on SME growth and formalisation. The fact that 92 percent of the country's 2.6 million businesses are informal micro-enterprises highlights a critical vulnerability: these businesses generate limited tax revenue, struggle to access finance, create few quality jobs, and remain vulnerable to external shocks. Helping these businesses become more formal, digital, and scalable could unlock significant economic benefits.

Digital inclusion is particularly crucial. When entrepreneurs can reliably connect to the internet and use digital tools effectively, they gain access to broader customer bases, reduce transaction costs, obtain timely business information, build professional networks, and participate in regional and global markets. This aligns with Ghana's broader development goals under ECOWAS and continental initiatives emphasising digital economy growth.

The partnership between Telecel and the GEA signals government and private sector recognition that SME transformation requires collaborative effort. While Telecel clearly benefits from increased data usage and customer acquisition, the initiative addresses a genuine market need: most Ghanaian SMEs lack access to affordable, practical business training and digital solutions tailored to their circumstances.

Expanding beyond Accra

This year's SME Month will extend beyond the capital through the Telecel Business Runway, taking the programme to Ghana's Western Region. This geographical expansion is significant, as it acknowledges that entrepreneurship and business growth aspirations exist throughout the country, not merely in Accra. Reaching SMEs, start-ups, financial advisors, and investors across regions could help distribute economic opportunity more equitably and unlock growth potential in underserved areas.
