MTN Ghana Hosts Digital Economy Masterclass: AI and Strategy Key to Business Growth
MTN Ghana has brought together business leaders and entrepreneurs to explore how Ghanaian companies can harness digital transformation to compete and grow. The third MTN Masterclass Series, held in Accra under the theme "Thriving in the Digital Economy: Unlocking Opportunities in a Digital-First World," attracted more than 120 entrepreneurs and business customers, with additional participation through MTN's digital platforms.
The event underscores the urgent need for Ghanaian businesses—particularly small and medium enterprises—to embrace digital tools and artificial intelligence if they are to remain competitive in an increasingly technology-driven marketplace. Industry experts who spoke at the masterclass emphasised that the digital transformation is not simply about keeping pace with global trends, but rather about identifying new opportunities that technological change creates.
What Digital Tools Mean for Ghanaian Businesses
Eric Puplampu, Senior Manager of Products, User Experience and Design at MTN Ghana, framed the masterclass as a practical knowledge-sharing platform. He noted that MTN's focus is to equip businesses with the skills, strategies and insights needed to thrive in a digital-first economy. "The objective is not simply to keep up with change. It is to understand the opportunities that change presents and use them to build stronger, more competitive businesses," Puplampu said.
Panellists highlighted specific, actionable approaches for businesses seeking to digitise. Isaac Kofi Maafo, CEO of DigiTransact AI and Executive Director of BulkSMS Ghana, advised entrepreneurs to adopt simple digital tools with discipline and clarity. He emphasised that small and medium enterprises need not invest in complex systems; rather, they should focus on practical, easy-to-use solutions that improve operational efficiency and productivity.
Gideon Asare, CEO of Adansi Travels and Founder of Africon AI, illustrated the transformative potential of digital platforms by describing how geographical boundaries are no longer a constraint. "If you could sit in Obuasi and get a customer in Accra, somebody who never knew you, that is the digital economy," Asare explained. His example captures how digital platforms enable Ghanaian businesses to expand their market reach far beyond their physical locations.
AI and the Future of Work in Ghana
Artificial intelligence emerged as a central theme in the discussions. Rachael Tachie-Menson, Founder and Managing Partner of Author Digital Labs, reframed the conversation around AI from one of loss to one of opportunity. Rather than focusing on job displacement, she encouraged businesses and professionals to recognise that AI is shifting the nature of work itself. Skills such as critical thinking, leadership, domain expertise and sound judgement will become increasingly valuable as routine tasks are automated.
"I think the biggest opportunity here is simply thinking about what becomes possible rather than what we lose," Tachie-Menson said. This mindset is crucial for Ghanaian entrepreneurs who may feel apprehensive about integrating AI into their operations.
Why This Matters for Ghana
Ghana's digital economy is still developing, and initiatives like MTN's Masterclass Series play a vital role in building awareness and capability among business leaders. The country has made significant strides in mobile penetration and internet access, but many businesses—especially outside major urban centres—lag behind in adopting digital tools and strategies.
The panellists underscored that success in the digital economy depends not only on technology adoption but also on building credibility, visibility and trust online. For Ghanaian businesses, this means consistently sharing knowledge, engaging authentically with customers and audiences, and establishing transparent relationships in digital spaces.
As Ghana's economy becomes increasingly digital, events like this masterclass help demystify technology and provide entrepreneurs with practical guidance. MTN Ghana has announced plans to host a fourth edition later this year, signalling its commitment to supporting the country's digital transformation and ensuring that Ghanaian businesses are equipped to compete effectively in the modern economy.
