346 New Recruits Sworn Into Ghana Navy After Six Months of Rigorous Training

Ghana's Navy has added 346 newly trained personnel to its ranks following the successful completion of a demanding six-month training programme. The passing-out parade for Basic Training Intake 85 (BT 85) took place on Friday, 25 September, at the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) facility in Nutekpor, Volta Region, marking a significant milestone for the recruits and the institution.

The 26-week course combined classroom instruction with practical exercises and military drills, equipping the new naval personnel with the foundational skills and knowledge required for service in Ghana's maritime defence force. The comprehensive training regimen addressed both technical competencies and the character development essential for military service.

Leadership Calls for Professionalism and Integrity

Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, speaking at the ceremony, emphasised that joining the Ghana Armed Forces extends far beyond wearing a military uniform. He stressed that the recruits now carry the responsibility and trust placed in them by the Ghanaian people, and must discharge their duties with unwavering integrity, professionalism and patriotism.

Mr Gunu highlighted the diverse security challenges facing the nation, urging the new recruits to remain vigilant against armed robbery, land-guard activities, cybercrime, drug trafficking and threats to public order. He cautioned them against extortion, brutality and other unprofessional conduct, positioning them as ambassadors of law and order in their communities.

Commodore Godson Kwabla Zowonoo (Rtd), the Reviewing Officer, reinforced these values, reminding the recruits that their training marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of professional development rather than its conclusion. He urged them to pursue continuous improvement, exercise sound judgement and remain committed to excellence whilst respecting lawful authority.

Recognition of Excellence

The ceremony acknowledged outstanding individual achievements. Recruit Petty Officer Class 1 Asafo-Agyei Audrey Kantanka earned the title of Overall Best Recruit, whilst Recruit Chief Petty Officer Class 1 Alimenu Hamza received the Best in Drill award. Ordinary Seaman Under Naval Training (OSUT) Amadi Blankson De-young Jnr was recognised for academic excellence, and OSUT Sadiq Huseifa received the Commanding Officer's Special Award.

The passing-out parade was attended by the South Tongu District Chief Executive Victoria Dzeklu, former Chief of the Naval Staff Rear Admiral Geoffrey Mawuli Biekro (Rtd), senior military officers, instructors and families of the graduates, underlining the institutional and community significance of the milestone.
