Black Stars suffer opening stumble in AFCON 2027 qualifying bid, lose 2-0 to Ivory Coast

Ghana's Black Stars endured a difficult opening to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, falling to a 2-0 defeat against Ivory Coast in Bouaké on Sunday. The loss leaves Carlos Queiroz's side bottom of Group C and facing mounting pressure to recover as the qualifiers intensify.

Malick Yalcouye broke the deadlock in the 29th minute with a powerful strike from outside the box, before Frank Kessie sealed victory from the penalty spot in the 56th minute. The penalty decision proved controversial, with Ghanaian players protesting after Yalcouye went to ground following contact with Fatawu in the penalty area.

For much of the encounter, Ghana struggled to impose themselves on a dominant Ivory Coast side that controlled 62% of possession. The Black Stars created few clear-cut opportunities and did not register a shot on target until the 80th minute—a stark reflection of their subdued performance.

Ghana's injury crisis hampers opening display

Ghana's squad was significantly depleted for the trip to Bouaké, with several key players ruled out through injury. Captain Jordan Ayew, Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo, Tottenham forward Mohammed Kudus and midfielder Thomas Partey all missed the fixture, weakening an already stretched attacking unit.

Brandon Thomas led the line with Christopher Bonsu Baah and Fatawu Issahaku in supporting roles, whilst Ernest Nuamah operated in an advanced midfield position. The attacking setup lacked the cutting edge Ghana needed against their experienced opponents, and Nuamah's effort from distance in the 20th minute proved to be their only genuine early opportunity.

Manager Queiroz responded with a triple substitution in the 64th minute, bringing on Felix Afena-Gyan, Benjamin Tetteh and Augustine Boakye to inject fresh attacking impetus. Whilst the changes produced some late pressure, Ghana could not find a way back into the match. Afena-Gyan and Boakye, making his long-awaited Black Stars debut, came closest to scoring in stoppage time, but their efforts proved fruitless.

This defeat carries extra significance for the Black Stars, who are aiming to end a difficult period after missing the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations—their first continental showpiece absence in 20 years. The loss to Ivory Coast, one of Africa's strongest teams, sets a challenging tone for qualification.

Ghana faces a critical opportunity to bounce back when they travel to the Accra Sports Stadium on 29 September to face The Gambia. With Group C still wide open at this early stage, a victory at home would be essential to rebuild momentum and avoid further slipping behind their rivals. The injuries to key players must also be resolved quickly if Ghana are to mount a credible challenge to secure a place in Morocco 2027.
