NPP faces existential crisis as NDC gains ground, Afoko warns party

Party unity crucial to regain power, Afoko tells NPP

Paul Afoko, former National Chairman of the NPP and current aspirant for the position, has sounded an alarm over the party's dwindling influence, cautioning that internal fractures risk handing further electoral victories to the opposition NDC. Speaking on Nhyira FM's Kro Yi Mu Nsem programme, Mr Afoko highlighted the party's collapse from 160 to 80 parliamentary seats as evidence of structural weakness that demands urgent remedy before the 2028 general elections.

The veteran politician expressed particular concern at the NDC's breakthrough in traditionally NPP-controlled territories. "Wenchi in the Bono Region and Yendi in the Northern Region were not ordinary seats—they were held by people tied to our party's foundation," he stated. He argued that such losses in strongholds once considered unloseable reflect a deeper malaise afflicting the party and its machinery.

Mr Afoko positioned himself as the unifier the party needs, pledging to undertake a comprehensive reconciliation exercise to bring back disaffected members and former senior figures, notably Alan Kyerematen. He also urged the party's National Executive Council to show restraint in disciplinary matters involving prominent members, warning against expulsions that might further weaken the party's ranks.

Reflecting on his own 2015 suspension from the NPP, Mr Afoko described the ordeal as painful but reaffirmed his unwavering commitment. "The party is in my DNA, and I can't let it collapse," he declared, framing healing and cohesion as the essential medicine for an ailing organisation.
