Government Tightens Grip on Road Contractors: Completion Rule Before New Awards
The Ministry of Roads and Highways is implementing stricter accountability measures to ensure efficient project delivery under Ghana's Big Push infrastructure initiative.
Roads Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza has declared that contractors with incomplete government road projects will be barred from receiving new contracts in subsequent phases of the programme. This policy aims to prevent a cycle of abandoned or stalled projects across the country.
The directive represents a significant shift in procurement practices, targeting contractors who have failed to meet completion deadlines on existing road construction and rehabilitation work. By linking future contract awards to current project performance, the ministry hopes to accelerate project delivery nationwide.
The Big Push programme remains a cornerstone of Ghana's infrastructure development strategy, with road projects critical to economic connectivity and regional trade. The new completion requirement is expected to incentivise contractors to prioritise finishing existing work before pursuing additional government contracts.
