Accra Floods: Residents Scavenge Warehouse Goods Swept Away by Monday's Downpour

Residents in several parts of Accra were filmed wading through floodwaters on Monday to collect goods that had been swept out of an unidentified warehouse, after torrential rains caused widespread flooding across the capital. Videos circulating on social media showed large crowds scrambling through debris-strewn, flooded streets to retrieve items carried away by the rushing water.

Among the goods reportedly recovered were food items, toiletries, gas cylinders, and electrical appliances, many of which were found scattered along the Tema Motorway and surrounding communities. The warehouse involved has not yet been officially identified, and authorities have not confirmed the value of the lost stock or the full extent of damage to the facility.

The flooding on Monday morning left major roads across the capital severely inundated and traffic at a standstill. The Tetteh Quashie Interchange was among the worst-affected spots, with floodwaters submerging sections of the underpass and leaving several vehicles stranded. Other communities hit hard included Tse Addo, Alajo, Achimota, Dzorwulu, Tesano, Weija, Mallam, Spintex, Apenkwa, and areas around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

Sections of the N1 Highway along the Accra–Kasoa stretch through Weija and Mallam were also overrun by floodwaters, causing significant gridlock during the Monday morning rush hour. The Interior Minister urged Accra residents to work from home where possible as the situation continued to develop throughout the day.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has deployed emergency response teams to affected areas. The agency is advising residents in low-lying and flood-prone communities to remain vigilant, stay off flooded roads, and move to safer locations if necessary.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has issued a further warning that additional rainfall is expected within the next 24 hours. The latest floods come after weeks of heavy rains that have already caused considerable damage across southern Ghana, raising fresh concerns about the country's flood preparedness and drainage infrastructure.
