Three Dead in Alajo as Accra Floods Trigger Electrocution Fears
The death toll from severe flooding in the Alajo community of Accra has climbed to three, with all victims believed to have been electrocuted after rapidly rising floodwaters made contact with electrical installations inside their homes. A possible fourth fatality has been reported though authorities have yet to independently confirm it.
The deadly floods were triggered by torrential rains that began on Sunday night and continued into Monday morning, submerging roads, homes, and businesses across large parts of the capital and causing widespread disruption during the morning rush hour. Alajo has emerged as one of the worst-hit communities in the city.
Bodies of the first two victims were recovered by officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) with assistance from local residents, and have since been transported to the Maamobi Polyclinic. A third death was confirmed shortly afterwards.
In response to the flooding, both the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have cut power supply from the Mallam and Achimota primary substations as a precautionary measure after those facilities were themselves flooded. The public has been urged to stay well clear of submerged electrical installations and to report any fallen or exposed power lines to ECG or GRIDCo immediately.
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to deploy emergency response teams into their communities to step up rescue operations and provide relief to affected residents. The Ministry of the Interior has also issued a safety advisory asking residents to remain indoors, avoid flooded roads, and report emergencies promptly.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency has warned that rain-bearing clouds will persist and spread westward into the evening, with thunderstorms also forecast for Northern Ghana from late afternoon. Residents requiring emergency assistance can reach NADMO on 0302 772395 or 0299 344030, or via WhatsApp on 055 160 9393.
