Greater Accra Minister Deploys Emergency Teams as Floods Grip Communities Across the Region

Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to step up emergency operations after torrential rains on Monday left numerous communities submerged in floodwaters.

In a statement dated 29th June 2026, Mrs Ocloo instructed every MMDCE to deploy emergency response teams alongside officers from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Police Service to support ongoing rescue efforts. Assemblies have been tasked with evacuating trapped residents, assessing damage on the ground, and providing immediate relief to affected households.

"Every MMDCE is expected to remain fully engaged until the situation is brought under control. This is a time for decisive leadership and swift action," the Minister's statement read.

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council is co-ordinating closely with all emergency agencies to manage the crisis. Mrs Ocloo also urged residents to exercise caution, warning that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast further rainfall across parts of the region in the coming days.

  • Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid flood-prone areas, open drains, and fast-moving floodwaters.
  • Parents and guardians are urged to prevent children from playing in floodwaters or attempting to cross flooded roads.
  • Those requiring emergency assistance can reach NADMO via its emergency hotlines or WhatsApp platform.

Expressing sympathy for those displaced or who suffered losses, the Minister assured affected residents that government and emergency agencies would continue working until communities are safe. "To everyone affected by this disaster, I assure you that I stand with you," she said.
