Weija Dam Alert: NADMO Issues Urgent Evacuation Order for Spillway Communities
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued an urgent directive for residents living in communities along the Weija Dam spillway to evacuate immediately and move to safer, higher ground.
Among the areas directly affected by the evacuation order are Tetegu, Bortianor and Oblogo — communities situated in close proximity to the spillway and therefore at heightened risk of flooding should water levels rise further.
NADMO officials are urging residents not to delay their departure, warning that failure to heed the directive could place lives in serious danger. Authorities have not yet disclosed the precise water levels at the dam, but the urgency of the order suggests conditions are deteriorating rapidly.
The Weija Dam, which serves as a critical source of drinking water for parts of Greater Accra, has historically caused flooding in surrounding low-lying communities during periods of heavy rainfall when operators are compelled to open the spillway to prevent the dam from overtopping.
Residents in the listed communities and surrounding areas are strongly advised to comply with NADMO's instructions promptly, secure essential belongings, and await further updates from disaster management authorities.
