GMet Warns of Spreading Storms as Accra Floods Force Power Cuts and Exam Postponements
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued an urgent weather advisory warning that storm clouds currently hovering over southeastern Ghana will continue to intensify and move westward, bringing heavy thunderstorms and rainfall to southwestern parts of the country from Monday afternoon into the evening. The forecast, released at 11:00 UTC on Monday, 29th June 2026, cautioned that the rains would vary in intensity across affected zones.
In the north, residents can expect periods of sunshine during the day, though GMet warns that thunderstorms and rain are likely to develop over parts of the northern sector from late afternoon into the evening hours.
The weather warning follows a particularly destructive Monday morning, during which heavy downpours triggered severe flooding across several parts of Accra and its surrounding communities. The deluge disrupted road traffic and brought commercial activity in affected areas to a near standstill.
Power Supply Cut, Exams Postponed
As floodwaters rose, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) took the precautionary step of temporarily cutting power supply from the Mallam and Achimota primary substations. The Ghana School of Law also announced that examinations originally scheduled for Monday have been pushed to Tuesday in response to the flooding.
The Ministry of the Interior has urged the public to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, while the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has deployed emergency response teams to areas worst affected by the floods. GMet has advised citizens — particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone communities — to remain vigilant as conditions could worsen.
Members of the public requiring emergency assistance are encouraged to contact the Ghana Police Service on 18555 or 112, the Ghana National Fire Service on 192, or NADMO on 112.
