GRIDCo and ECG Cut Power at Mallam and Achimota Substations After Floodwaters Breach Critical Infrastructure

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have jointly suspended operations at the Mallam and Achimota primary substations following severe flooding that compromised critical electricity infrastructure in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

In a joint statement, the two utility firms said rising floodwaters entered both facilities, creating serious hazards for equipment and personnel. The decision to shut down was described as a necessary precaution to protect lives and prevent further damage to transmission and distribution systems.

Technical teams have been deployed to assess the full extent of the damage at both sites. The companies cautioned that persistent rainfall across the capital could trigger additional outages in other areas should safety concerns emerge there as well.

Public Urged to Report Hazards Promptly

GRIDCo and ECG are calling on residents to be vigilant and report any of the following to the nearest ECG office or through official customer service lines:

  • Fallen electricity poles or collapsed lines
  • Exposed or dangling wires near flooded areas
  • Flooded electrical installations in their communities

The companies stressed that swift reporting will enable emergency response teams to act quickly, reducing the risk of electrocution and property loss. Both organisations apologised for the inconvenience caused and promised to restore electricity supply as soon as it is safe to do so for both workers and equipment.
