GRIDCo and ECG Cut Power at Mallam and Achimota Substations as Floods Threaten Electrical Infrastructure

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have jointly announced the temporary suspension of operations at the Mallam and Achimota primary substations in the Greater Accra Region, following extensive flooding triggered by heavy rainfall across parts of the capital.

In a joint statement released by both utilities, the decision was described as a precautionary safety measure taken after floodwaters encroached on vital electricity infrastructure at the two substations. Officials noted that the conditions posed serious dangers to both electrical equipment and the personnel responsible for operating the facilities.

GRIDCo and ECG confirmed that technical teams are actively assessing the full extent of the damage to the transmission and distribution network. The utilities also warned that further power interruptions could occur in other flood-affected areas should safety risks be identified at additional sites.

Public Urged to Report Hazards Promptly

Both companies called on Ghanaians to exercise heightened caution around electrical infrastructure during the ongoing rains. Residents are being urged to report the following hazards immediately to their nearest ECG office or through official customer service channels:

• Fallen or leaning electricity poles
• Exposed or downed power lines
• Flooded electrical installations or transformer sites
• Any other electricity-related dangers in their communities

GRIDCo and ECG apologised for the disruption to customers and assured the public that power would be restored to affected areas as soon as weather conditions improve and it is safe to resume operations. They thanked Ghanaians for their patience during the difficult period.
