ECG and GRIDCo Cut Power to Achimota and Mallam Substations Over Flood Risk

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have jointly suspended power supply from two major substations in Accra — the Achimota and Mallam primary substations — following flooding that has put both facilities and the surrounding communities at risk.

The two power utilities described the shutdown as a precautionary measure, taken strictly in the interest of public safety. Flooding around electrical infrastructure poses severe dangers, including electrocution and equipment damage, and the decision was made to avert any potential disaster.

The move means that residents and businesses in areas served by the two substations are likely to experience disruptions to their electricity supply until conditions improve and it is deemed safe to restore operations.

ECG and GRIDCo have urged the public to remain patient and to stay away from flooded areas, particularly those near electrical installations. Both companies indicated that work to restore supply would begin as soon as the flooding subsides and safety can be guaranteed.

The development comes amid widespread flooding in parts of Accra, which has become an annual challenge for the capital during the rainy season. Authorities continue to appeal to citizens to avoid blocking waterways and drains, which often worsen the impact of heavy rains across the city.
