Ghana Tourism Authority Unveils New Regulations and Digital System to Modernise Industry

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has held stakeholder consultations in Tema to introduce new regulatory reforms and a digital tourism information system aimed at modernising Ghana's hospitality and events industry. The engagement brought together hoteliers, event planners and tourism operators to deliberate on the draft Tourism (Registration and Licensing of Multi-purpose Establishments and Providers of Event Management Services) Regulations, 2026, which will be presented to Parliament.

Tema Regional Manager Isaac Asiam explained that the proposed regulations seek to establish clear standards for registration, licensing and operation of hospitality establishments and event management providers. He stressed that the initiative is intended to promote professionalism, ensure compliance with industry standards, safeguard public safety and enhance service quality. Mr Asiam noted that effective regulation requires meaningful collaboration with stakeholders directly affected by implementation, making the consultative process essential before finalisation.

The tourism landscape has evolved significantly, requiring the regulatory framework to adapt to emerging trends and contemporary operational requirements. Ghana's tourism sector has not seen major regulatory amendments since 2016, making these reforms timely for positioning the industry to meet current global standards.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey introduced the Ghana Tourism Information System (GTIS), a digital platform designed to improve tourism data collection and management across the country. The GTIS will provide industry players and policymakers with accurate, reliable data to facilitate informed decision-making and effective policy formulation. Mr Aggrey expressed confidence that the reforms will improve regulatory compliance, enhance service delivery and strengthen Ghana's competitiveness as a tourism destination.

Participants commended the GTA for the engagement and pledged support for implementing the regulatory reforms to improve standards and service delivery across the tourism and hospitality sector.
