Queiroz Departs as Black Stars Coach, Calls for Structural Reforms in Ghana Football
Queiroz Exits with Message on Ghana Football's Future
Portuguese head coach Carlos Queiroz has departed his role with the Black Stars following Ghana's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign at the Round of 32 stage. In a farewell statement, Queiroz emphasised that whilst the tournament delivered valuable lessons and moments of national pride, the focus must now shift to building stronger foundations for long-term success.
Queiroz stressed that Ghana's football development cannot rely solely on match performances. "The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch," he said, calling for improved systems, structures and environments to nurture the nation's talent pool. He encouraged the Ghana Football Association and stakeholders to use World Cup lessons as a catalyst for deeper institutional reform.
Reflecting on his tenure, Queiroz expressed gratitude to the GFA, players and technical staff for their commitment throughout the campaign. He acknowledged that whilst the team fell short of ultimate goals, the Black Stars had restored international respect and credibility. "We honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football's greatest stage," he remarked, addressing supporters directly.
The coach concluded with a philosophical note on the sport itself: "Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn." His departure leaves Ghana's football authorities to chart a new direction for the national team's development.
