Forestry Chief Demands Impartial Enforcement as Military Begins Flood Prevention Demolitions

Ghana's Deputy Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, has urged the Ghana Armed Forces to demolish illegal structures blocking waterways without political bias or favour. His remarks come as the military prepares nationwide post-flood recovery operations following devastating June 29 floods that killed residents, displaced families and caused significant damage across Greater Accra and other regions.

"Demolish illegal structures without fear or favour," Mr. Kotoko stated, emphasising that laws must apply equally to all citizens regardless of political affiliation or social standing. He warned that selective enforcement has allowed waterway encroachment to continue unchecked, directly contributing to Accra's persistent flooding challenges.

The Forestry Commission official noted that previous governments have announced demolition drives following major floods but failed to sustain enforcement efforts. He argued this inconsistency has allowed illegal building to resume, perpetuating the cycle of disaster and destruction.

Mr. Kotoko stressed that environmental laws and planning regulations cannot be compromised for political convenience, and that protecting lives and public infrastructure must take priority over private interests. He called on authorities to enforce planning rules consistently year-round rather than waiting for catastrophes to trigger action.
