Gold Coast Fund Collapse: Thousands petition Mahama over GH₵3.6bn in unpaid investments

Thousands of Ghanaians left financially stranded by the collapse of Gold Coast Fund Management have escalated their demands for payment, petitioning President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in recovering over GH₵3.6 billion in outstanding investments.

The move represents a critical moment for affected customers who have endured years of uncertainty and fragmented partial payments since the fund management company's failure. According to Charles Nyame, convenor of the aggrieved customers group, the total original debt stood above GH₵5.5 billion, with recent disbursements only partially addressing the crisis.

The Payment Timeline and Outstanding Balance

Government has made some progress in addressing the outstanding claims. In September 2024, GH₵700 million was released to customers, following earlier payments made in 2023 and 2024. However, these disbursements have been insufficient, leaving approximately GH₵3.6 billion still unpaid.

Speaking to JoyBusiness after presenting the petition on Tuesday, 1 September, Nyame emphasised that the previous payments, whilst welcomed, represent only a fraction of what customers are owed. He stated clearly: "We want the rest of our money."

The customers are now demanding that government provide a transparent, long-term payment plan with a definitive timeline for settling the remaining claims. This would give affected investors clarity on when they might finally recover their locked-up funds.

Human Cost of the Delay

The prolonged delay in payment has inflicted severe hardship on affected customers. Many individuals invested their life savings and retirement funds with Gold Coast Fund Management, expecting reliable returns. The company's collapse left them financially vulnerable, with years of waiting exacerbating their distress.

Nyame highlighted that the extended period without access to their investments has deteriorated living conditions for thousands of Ghanaians, pushing many into financial hardship. For working families, small business owners and retirees, this represents a devastating loss of economic security.

Why It Matters for Ghana

The Gold Coast Fund Management scandal reflects broader concerns about investor protection and financial regulation in Ghana. The scale of the outstanding payment—over GH₵3.6 billion—represents a significant liability on government finances and a test of the administration's commitment to addressing historical financial failures.

This case also underscores the vulnerability of ordinary Ghanaians in the investment landscape. When large financial institutions fail, retail investors typically bear the heaviest losses, whilst regulatory mechanisms and government response systems are often slow to act.

The petition to President Mahama signals that affected customers view escalation to the highest political level as necessary. The government's response will likely influence public confidence in financial institutions and investor confidence more broadly in the Ghanaian economy.

The customers' appeal comes at a time when Ghana faces multiple fiscal pressures, making the settlement of GH₵3.6 billion a complex budgetary challenge. However, failure to address this outstanding obligation risks further erosion of public trust in state institutions and deepens the economic crisis for thousands of households already struggling to recover their investments.

As negotiations continue, the focus remains on establishing a credible, time-bound payment schedule that acknowledges the scale of the debt and the urgency of providing relief to affected Ghanaians.
