Mahama wraps Ahafo tour, pledges fair share of development as NDC sweeps parliamentary seats

President John Dramani Mahama has concluded his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Ahafo Region with commitments to equitable national development and direct engagement with regional leadership. Speaking at a citizens' forum in Goaso on Saturday, the President thanked local chiefs and residents for their electoral support, noting that the National Democratic Congress secured five of the region's six parliamentary seats in the 2024 general election.

The Resetting Ghana initiative forms a core part of Mahama's governance strategy, designed to decentralise decision-making by bringing government operations closer to communities, inspecting infrastructure progress, and fostering dialogue with traditional authorities and ordinary citizens. This regional tour represents the administration's effort to translate campaign promises into visible action at the grassroots level.

Infrastructure and regional development priorities

Central to the President's Ahafo visit were announcements on road development and urban upgrading. Mahama disclosed that his administration has commissioned road rehabilitation and construction work across all 16 regional capitals as part of Ghana's 70th Independence Anniversary preparations. Goaso, the Ahafo regional capital, is included in this national programme. Initial works have already started on selected routes in Accra, with expansion to other capitals expected to follow.

The government is advancing the Big Push Infrastructure Development Programme, a broader initiative aimed at modernising Ghana's transport networks and supporting economic activity. Beyond roads, the President outlined agricultural measures including support for poultry farming, the Farmer Service Centres scheme, and irrigation development projects intended to boost productivity and farmer incomes.

Healthcare expansion and social support

President Mahama emphasised two complementary health initiatives. The Free Primary Healthcare Programme aims to remove financial barriers to basic medical services for all Ghanaians, particularly vulnerable populations. Complementing this is MahamaCares, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, which targets chronic and expensive treatments such as cancer therapy and kidney dialysis. The initiative is framed as relief for individuals and families facing catastrophic health expenditures.

Why it matters for Ghana

The Ahafo Region has emerged as a significant economic zone following gold mining expansion and increased agricultural activity. The NDC's electoral dominance—winning five of six parliamentary seats—reflects strong regional support that the government now seeks to consolidate through visible development investment. President Mahama's emphasis on infrastructure, healthcare, and agricultural support addresses key voter concerns in rural and semi-urban areas where such investments directly improve living standards.

The Resetting Ghana Tour reflects a broader attempt to build accountability by bringing senior leadership into direct contact with communities and monitoring project implementation. For Ahafo residents, promised road upgrades ahead of the 70th Independence Anniversary signal near-term economic activity and improved connectivity, whilst healthcare initiatives respond to documented health system challenges in regional areas. However, success will depend on timely project execution and sustained investment beyond the political cycle.
