Teen arrested after violent machete attack and phone robbery in Asokore Mampong

A 19-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with a violent armed robbery in Asabi, Asokore Mampong Municipality, in the Ashanti Region. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of July 21, 2026, left the victim seriously injured and unconscious before police intervention.

According to a statement from the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the assault took place at approximately 12:20 am when the male victim was robbed of his mobile phone near the Presbyterian Church in Asabi. Officers from the Asokore Mampong Night Patrol Team, who were conducting routine patrols in the area, received information about the incident and quickly mobilised to the scene.

Upon arrival, the suspect attempted to evade police by fleeing to an unfinished building in the vicinity. The patrol team pursued and successfully apprehended the suspect, identified as Ahmed Mustapha, 19 years old. A search of Mustapha yielded the victim's mobile phone and a machete, both now retained as evidence in the ongoing investigation.

Victim's condition and recovery

The victim sustained serious injuries during the robbery, including machete wounds to the forehead, neck, and left hand. He was immediately transported to the KNUST Hospital, where he was admitted for emergency treatment. By 5:30 am on the same day, medical staff reported that the victim had regained consciousness and was in stable condition, though he remains under observation for continued care.

The swift response by the night patrol team proved crucial in minimising further harm and ensuring the victim received timely medical attention. Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs at the Ashanti Regional Police Command, issued an official statement on Wednesday, July 22, confirming the arrest and providing details of the recovery efforts.
