Police smash major armed robbery gang in Kumasi; six arrested, manhunt on for seven others

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has dealt a significant blow to organised crime in the region by arresting six suspected members of an armed robbery syndicate that has terrorised communities across Kumasi. The arrests, made in August 2026 by the Anti Armed Robbery Unit following careful intelligence work, mark a major step in efforts to curb street crime that has plagued residents and businesses in the sprawling metropolitan area.

The six detained suspects—Philip Nyarko (alias "Kawawa"), Hadi Samed (alias "Toronto"), Issahaku Musah (alias "Isak"), Suraj Mohammed (alias "Baba Nde"), Hadi Abdul Majeed (alias "Panie"), and Foster Owusu Afriyie (alias "Joe Fraizer")—have been linked to a string of street robberies targeting residents in Kaase, Ahinsan Estate, Santasi New Site, Bronikrom, and Kwadaso Estate. Police investigations have uncovered a disturbing pattern of criminal activity, with recovered evidence painting a picture of a well-organised theft operation.

The Police recovered two motorcycles, two machetes, multiple knives, an iPhone 13, five keypad mobile phones, a laptop and 33 assorted mobile phones believed to be proceeds from the robberies. Further investigation led to the arrest of Augustine Agyemang Duah, suspected of being the gang's phone unlocking specialist—an individual who would help the criminals gain access to stolen devices for resale on the black market.

Repeat offenders slip back into crime

Troublingly, three of the arrested suspects—Philip Nyarko, Hadi Samed and Abdul Shattar—had been arrested previously on 6 December 2025 on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery and attempted robbery. They were arraigned before Asokwa Circuit Court 1 and released on bail, but investigations suggest some returned to criminal activity shortly after their release. One suspect, Abdul Shattar, remains at large.

The case against the three previously arrested individuals is still pending before the court, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the bail system in preventing repeat offences. The Police are now pursuing Abdul Shattar alongside five other suspected syndicate members identified as Andy, Umaru, Dauda, Malik and Abdul Farouk. The Command has urged the public not to confront these individuals and has asked anyone with information about their whereabouts to contact the Police immediately.

These criminal syndicates target both pedestrians and businesses, creating a climate of insecurity that undermines economic activity and quality of life. The recovery of dozens of stolen mobile phones suggests a sophisticated operation with networks for disposing of stolen goods—likely feeding into a broader black market economy.

The re-arrest of previously detained suspects highlights systemic challenges in Ghana's justice system, including lengthy court delays and the challenge of keeping hardened criminals off the streets pending trial. The Ashanti Regional Police's success in this operation demonstrates the value of intelligence-led policing but also underscores the ongoing resource and capacity challenges faced by law enforcement.

The Police Command has encouraged victims of robbery to contact them to help identify recovered property, and has thanked the IGP's Special Operations Team for support. Investigations continue to establish the full scope of the syndicate's activities and identify additional members.
