Ashanti court hands down 40-year combined sentence to two armed robbers in Bekwai

The Bekwai Circuit Court has delivered a stern message to would-be criminals in the Ashanti Region after sentencing two men to a combined 40 years' imprisonment with hard labour for armed robbery. Emmanuel Adams, 23, a galamsey operator, and Vincent Aidoo, 22, an okada (motorcycle taxi) rider, were each handed 20-year sentences by His Honour Isaac Appiatu for robbing a motorbike at Edwenase near Jacobu in the Amansie Central District.

The crime and conviction

The robbery took place on October 4, 2026, in an area within the Bekwai Circuit Court's jurisdiction. The pair targeted a motorbike, a common means of transport and livelihood for many residents in rural Ashanti communities. According to the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, the case was thoroughly investigated and prosecuted, resulting in the convictions handed down this week.

Following the sentencing, the Ashanti South Regional Police Command Court Officer and Acting Public Affairs Officer, ASP Lloyd Baidoo, emphasised that the combined 40-year sentence demonstrates the judiciary's commitment to tackling armed crime in the region. He told Adom News correspondent Isaac K. Normanyo at the court that the severity of the punishment reflects the seriousness with which the courts treat robbery offences.

Why it matters for Ghana

Armed robbery remains a persistent challenge in many parts of Ghana, particularly in semi-rural and peri-urban areas where enforcement can be inconsistent. The Ashanti Region, which includes districts like Amansie Central, has experienced various property crimes that affect ordinary people trying to make a living. Motorbikes and okadas are critical to the livelihoods of riders, transport operators and small traders, making such thefts especially damaging to vulnerable communities.

This conviction signals that the courts are taking a hard line against perpetrators. The substantial sentences may serve as a deterrent to others considering similar crimes. However, it also raises broader questions about what drives young men—particularly in galamsey communities—towards criminality. The involvement of a galamsey operator in the crime underscores ongoing concerns about unlicensed mining and the social problems it can create in mining-affected areas.

Police warning and public safety

ASP Baidoo used the sentencing as an opportunity to issue a direct warning to young people in the region. He cautioned that anyone arrested for robbery and other criminal activities would face prosecution and be dealt with according to the full force of the law. Such public statements from police are part of ongoing efforts to enhance public awareness about the consequences of crime.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command continues to prioritise crime prevention and detection across its jurisdiction. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities and crimes to the nearest police station to help maintain safety in their communities.
