Queiroz Exits Black Stars Post After World Cup Disappointment, Calls for Structural Change
Queiroz Departs with Pride Despite World Cup Exit
Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has concluded his tenure as Black Stars head coach following Ghana's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32, ending their tournament hopes. In an emotional Facebook message, Queiroz reflected on his time with the national side, emphasising that whilst progress was made, more could have been achieved.
Appointed in April 2026 following Otto Addo's departure, Queiroz was brought in on a short-term contract specifically for the World Cup campaign. Sports Minister Kofi Adams had confirmed the arrangement was conditional on performance, with possibilities for extension based on results. The disappointing exit has marked the end of that agreement.
Structural Improvements Needed Off the Pitch
In his farewell message, Queiroz stressed that the Black Stars' future success requires far more than on-field improvements. He called for robust institutional frameworks and preparation structures to support player development and protection. "The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch," he wrote, urging the Ghana Football Association to create optimal environments for nurturing the nation's football talent.
Queiroz praised the GFA leadership, players and technical staff for their dedication, whilst expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve Ghana. He acknowledged that complete sporting satisfaction was not achieved but maintained that the team had restored credibility and respect to the Black Stars internationally. He concluded with an optimistic message: "Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now."
