Black Stars Fall to Croatia But Still Advance at 2026 World Cup
Ghana's Black Stars suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their concluding Group L fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Philadelphia, with a late Nikola Vlašić header proving the difference between the two sides. Despite the loss, Ghana advanced to the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed finishers in the expanded tournament.
England topped the group with seven points following their 2-0 win over Panama, while Croatia claimed second place on six points. Ghana finished third on four points — enough to keep their World Cup dream alive.
Croatia dominated the early exchanges and Vlašić struck the post before Petar Sučić broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, firing a low strike from roughly 30 yards into the bottom corner. It was the first goal Ghana had conceded across three group-stage matches.
Coach Carlos Queiroz responded at the break, introducing Opong Peprah and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku to inject greater threat going forward. The gamble appeared to work when Derrick Luckassen volleyed home a Ernest Nuamah free-kick at the far post in the 76th minute. The goal was initially disallowed for offside before a VAR review confirmed that Kwasi Sibo, though in an offside position, had not interfered with play — and the equaliser stood.
Ghana's joy was short-lived, however. Just seven minutes later, Luka Modrić whipped in a corner and Vlašić rose to power a header past goalkeeper Asare, the ball deflecting in off the inside of the post to restore Croatia's lead. Asare had earlier produced a brilliant one-handed save to deny Mario Pašalić, but Croatia held firm in the closing stages to seal their place as group runners-up.
Ghana will now await confirmation of their Round of 32 opponents as the group stage concludes across the tournament, with their participation in the knockout rounds secured despite finishing third in the group.
