Herald Editor Dogbey's Legal Team Files Appeal Against Contempt Conviction

By · · 1 min read · 28 views

Lawyer David Annan, representing journalist and Herald newspaper editor Larry Dogbey, has confirmed that an appeal has already been filed against the Accra High Court's contempt of court conviction. The announcement came during an interview on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, 27 June, dispelling suggestions that the defence team still had up to 10 days to initiate the appeals process.

Dogbey was convicted on Thursday, 25 June, by Justice Isaac Addo after being found guilty of contempt of court. The court ruled that publications by Dogbey constituted a deliberate breach of a court order that restricted further commentary on an ongoing legal dispute.

According to Annan, the appeal process commenced before recent discussions, and he stressed that once an appeal is formally filed, seeking additional relief at the trial court level becomes procedurally improper. "We have filed the appeal already," Annan stated, confirming that the case is now properly before the appellate court.

Following the High Court's ruling, Justice Addo granted a conditional 10-day bail window after the defence team's swift ex parte application seeking to stay execution of the custodial sentence pending the determination of the appeal.
