Not Every Government Role Should Be Politicised, Says Kofi Bentil
Policy analyst and public intellectual Kofi Bentil has cautioned against the growing trend of viewing government positions through a political lens, particularly roles in the judiciary and quasi-judicial institutions.
Bentil argued that when decisions made by courts and independent bodies are interpreted along party-political lines, it weakens the neutrality and credibility these institutions require to function effectively. He emphasised that such developments pose a serious threat to Ghana's institutional integrity.
The concern reflects broader anxieties about the independence of state institutions in Ghana. Many civil society observers have raised alarm about instances where judicial rulings or regulatory decisions are perceived as politically motivated, rather than purely merit-based or legally sound.
Bentil's remarks underscore a key principle of democratic governance: that certain offices—particularly those in the judiciary, electoral management, and other oversight bodies—must remain insulated from partisan political influence to maintain public trust and the rule of law.
