Local Leaders Must Stay Accountable to Communities, Says Mowire Chief
The Chief of Mowire in Afigya Kwabre South District, Ashanti Region, has urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across Ghana to deepen their engagement with communities and maintain transparency in local governance. Nana Gyamfi Kumanin Sarpong emphasised that regular interaction between government officials and residents is vital for effective service delivery and ensures development projects meet people's actual needs.
The chief's comments came during a district-wide accountability tour by Afigya Kwabre South DCE Patricia Pearl Ankrah, held 18 months into the current administration. The week-long exercise aimed to brief residents on ongoing development initiatives, encourage civic participation, and create direct dialogue between the Assembly and local communities. Nana Sarpong commended the initiative as exemplary transparent leadership and suggested other MMDCEs adopt similar approaches to build citizen trust and understanding of government activities.
Road Infrastructure Remains Critical Priority
During town hall discussions in Mowire, the chief highlighted deteriorating road conditions as the community's most urgent concern, noting that poor roads hamper business activities and threaten public health. He appealed to the DCE to prioritise urgent repairs to the dusty road network affecting residents.
Responding to concerns, DCE Ankrah confirmed that Mowire roads are included in a broader district infrastructure improvement programme already contracted to construction firms. She acknowledged implementation delays caused by legal disputes but assured residents that work would resume once outstanding matters are resolved, reaffirming the Assembly's commitment to district-wide road rehabilitation.
