President Mahama to tour Ho, inspect stadium upgrade plans as region awaits development boost

President John Dramani Mahama will spend Thursday and Friday in the Volta Region undertaking what officials describe as a working visit focused on engaging residents and reviewing the implementation of government initiatives across the area. The two-day tour forms part of his broader "Accounting to the People Tour," a nationwide engagement strategy designed to strengthen dialogue between the presidency and communities.

Volta Regional Minister James Gunu announced the visit during a breakfast meeting with members of the Ghana Journalists Association in Ho, outlining an itinerary that will prioritise interactions with residents and inspections of key infrastructure projects. The centrepiece of Thursday's schedule is a 10:00 am inspection of Ho Sports Stadium, where the President is expected to assess the current state of the facility and explore redevelopment plans.

Ho Stadium upgrade targets FIFA standards

The stadium inspection carries particular significance as the government has signalled its intention to rehabilitate Ho Sports Stadium to FIFA Category B standard—a designation that would substantially elevate Ghana's sports infrastructure in the Volta Region. Such an upgrade would position the facility among internationally recognised venues capable of hosting competitive football matches and other major sporting events. This development aligns with broader efforts to decentralise world-class sports infrastructure beyond Accra and strengthen regional sports development ecosystems.

Beyond the stadium, Minister Gunu highlighted ongoing construction work on an AstroTurf project at Ho Technical University, which is being executed by Ghana Gas. The project forms part of government efforts to improve training and recreational facilities for the tertiary institution's student population and the wider community.

Clarifying infrastructure claims and public communication

The Regional Minister used the announcement to address public confusion surrounding infrastructure projects in the region. He clarified that whilst speculation had circulated about an AstroTurf facility at Klefe in the Ho Municipality, no official documentation or formal award existed for such a project. An abandoned physical structure in the area has fuelled local discussion, but Gunu emphasised that this should not be conflated with active government initiatives. He urged residents to prioritise verified, official information when assessing government infrastructure plans and discouraged reliance on unconfirmed reports.

This distinction reflects broader challenges in Ghana's public communication around development projects, where rumour, abandoned structures, and incomplete information sometimes create misunderstandings about government intentions and progress.

Why it matters for Ghana

Presidential working visits to regions outside Accra signal government commitment to decentralised development and accountability to communities beyond the capital. The Volta Region, Ghana's smallest region by area, has historically advocated for improved sports infrastructure and developmental investment. A FIFA-standard stadium in Ho would position the region competitively for hosting national and international sporting events, generating potential economic activity and employment whilst elevating the profile of Volta Region sports development.

Minister Gunu expressed confidence that the presidential visit would provide a platform to discuss critical regional development priorities and deepen collaboration between government institutions and the people of Volta. The timing also underscores the government's early engagement with regions ahead of the 2024 election cycle, establishing dialogue channels and demonstrating responsiveness to local infrastructure needs.
