Bolgatanga Airport construction set to launch by end of 2026, Mahama confirms

President John Dramani Mahama has committed to beginning construction on the Bolgatanga Airport before the end of 2026, marking a significant milestone for regional infrastructure development in Ghana's Upper East Region. The announcement came during a tour of the area on Thursday, August 13, 2026, as government officials outlined the timeline for the long-anticipated project.

The president indicated that necessary approvals would be secured by October 2026, enabling the official sod-cutting ceremony to take place later that year. "By the end of the year, we'll come back here, and we'll cut the ribbon for the airport to start," Mahama stated during his visit. Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited and Builsa North Member of Parliament James Agalga echoed this commitment, noting that procurement processes were advancing rapidly. "We're working around the clock. At the moment, we are at public procurement. We're hoping that by October, we should receive all the necessary approvals to allow for you to come back and cut sword for work to commence in earnest," Agalga said.

Project specifications and timeline

Once construction begins, the airport is projected to take 24 months for completion, though the contractor has suggested the project could be delivered ahead of schedule. The facility will be built on approximately 4,000 acres of land donated by traditional authorities and will initially accommodate around 100,000 passengers annually, with design flexibility for future expansion.

The airport infrastructure will feature a 2.2-kilometre runway, aircraft apron, air traffic control tower, night-operation lighting, rescue and firefighting facilities, and a five-kilometre asphalted access road connecting to the main facility. These comprehensive facilities reflect government's ambition to establish Bolgatanga as a significant aviation hub for the northern regions.
