Osaka's Grand Slam Return: How New Coach and Family Support Are Reigniting Tennis Star's Fire

Osaka Stuns Sabalenka at Wimbledon

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has produced one of her most impressive performances in years, defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-2 6-1 on Centre Court to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals. The victory marks a significant milestone in Osaka's comeback journey and demonstrates the progress she has made since her return from maternity leave in July 2023.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Tracy Austin hailed the performance as "the best we've seen Naomi Osaka since she came back", highlighting the quality of Osaka's tennis. The 26-year-old displayed remarkable control and confidence, hitting 21 winners and winning 87% of points behind her first serve, whilst matching Sabalenka's pace with superior consistency.

Family, Coaching and Mental Mindset

Osaka credited her resurgence to three key factors: her coaching team led by Tomasz Wiktorowski, her renewed mental approach, and the support of her family—particularly her mother's cooking. "My mum is over there, she cooks a lot and I feel like her cooking is powering me," Osaka said, highlighting how having her family in London, including her three-year-old daughter Shai, has provided emotional stability during the tournament.

Coach Wiktorowski has focused on improving Osaka's grass-court movement through pattern recognition drills and technical adjustments. "Throughout the entire year, he's been getting me more comfortable with my movement," Osaka explained. Her approach to the game has also transformed—following a humbling 6-2 6-1 loss to Iga Swiatek in Rome, Osaka deliberately stepped back, reassessed her priorities, and committed to enjoying tennis without excessive pressure.

The Long Road Back

Osaka took 15 months of maternity leave after stepping away from professional tennis in 2021 to prioritise her mental health. During her absence, rivals including Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Sabalenka claimed major titles. Upon her return, Osaka struggled to regain her form, falling outside the top 50 rankings at one point. However, her quarter-final victory over Sabalenka suggests she has turned a significant corner, proving that with the right support system and mindset, she can return to competing at the highest level.
