OmniBSIC Bank Equips Accra School with Digital Learning Lab Through Rotary Partnership

OmniBSIC Bank Ghana Limited has partnered with the Rotary Club of Accra-Cantonment East to establish a digital learning hub at Prince of Peace International School in Accra, marking a significant push to integrate technology and robotics training into secondary education in the capital. The donation of 20 computers, unveiled during a commissioning ceremony, underscores growing corporate investment in bridging Ghana's digital skills gap among young people.

The initiative encompasses three key components: classroom computers for daily instruction, a Teacher in a Box (TIB) system that provides offline access to thousands of educational resources without internet connectivity, and a dedicated robotics education programme. The timing reflects broader concerns across Ghana's education sector about uneven technology access and the need to prepare students for an increasingly digital economy.

Teacher in a Box: Solving Connectivity Challenges

The Teacher in a Box system installed at the school addresses a persistent challenge in Ghanaian schools: unreliable or absent internet connectivity in many learning environments. The offline digital platform allows students to access educational materials, tutorials and interactive content without requiring broadband, making it particularly valuable for schools in areas with limited connectivity. Combined with robotics training modules, the system positions Prince of Peace to offer curriculum components that many Ghanaian secondary schools have yet to develop.

Robotics education itself has emerged as a critical gap. Coding, problem-solving and applied technology skills remain largely unavailable in most Ghanaian schools, yet these competencies are increasingly essential for university admissions and employment in the tech sector. By introducing robotics training early, the school creates a pathway for students to develop these skills while still in secondary education.

Youth Leadership Through Rotary's Interact Club

Alongside the tech infrastructure, the school inaugurated its Interact Club, Rotary International's youth service initiative. This programme emphasises leadership, community service and integrity among young people, complementing the technical skills development. George Tetteh Ocansey, Divisional Head at OmniBSIC, noted that such programmes shape future generations by encouraging critical thinking and civic responsibility alongside academic achievement.

Why This Matters for Ghana

The partnership signals a shift in how Ghanaian financial institutions approach corporate social responsibility, particularly in education. While many banks support scholarships or infrastructure projects, OmniBSIC's focus on digital skills and robotics reflects a more strategic alignment with Ghana's need for a tech-literate workforce.

Ghana's digital economy is expanding rapidly, with a growing tech sector creating demand for software developers, data analysts and technology managers. Secondary schools, however, continue to emphasise traditional subjects, leaving students unprepared for tech careers. Corporate-led initiatives like this one help fill that gap, though they remain isolated without systemic government investment in digital curriculum nationwide.

The Teacher in a Box approach is particularly relevant for Ghana, where school infrastructure varies dramatically across urban and rural areas. An offline system avoids the double burden of requiring both reliable electricity and internet connectivity, making it adaptable to Ghanaian realities. If scaled, such solutions could democratise access to quality digital resources across different regions.

OmniBSIC's commitment reflects the bank's broader corporate strategy following its 2017 merger between OmniBank and Sahel Sahara Bank. The consolidated institution now operates 41 locations nationwide and positions education and youth empowerment as core pillars of its community engagement, alongside health, environment and talent development initiatives.
