No tensions between us, says NPP General Secretary Kodua as party unites behind 2028 election push
The New Patriotic Party's General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua has moved to quash speculation about potential friction with John Boadu, declaring that both men are committed to working together for the party's benefit ahead of the 2028 general election.
The assurance comes after Boadu emerged as the leading candidate for the NPP's National Chairman position at the party's latest National Delegates Conference. This development follows Kodua's victory over Boadu in a contest for the General Secretary post at the 2022 National Delegates Conference, which had raised questions about how the two would operate under a shared party leadership structure.
Putting party above personal ambitions
Addressing concerns head-on, Kodua emphasised that neither he nor Boadu had publicly expressed reluctance to collaborate. "JB never stood anywhere and said that he can't work with me. Likewise, I never stood anywhere and said I cannot work with JB," Kodua stated, noting that both were sufficiently mature to prioritise the party's interests over past electoral contests.
The General Secretary's comments reflect an attempt to present a unified front as the NPP navigates its internal leadership transitions. With the party seeking to regain power after losing the 2024 presidential election, party officials are keen to project cohesion among top echelons.
Kodua underscored that the incoming national executive team and the General Secretary's office would work harmoniously to advance the party's electoral objectives, with all leaders rallying behind flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's candidacy for the 2029 presidential election.
Why it matters for Ghana
Leadership transitions within Ghana's major political parties carry real significance for the country's political trajectory. The NPP, as one of Ghana's two dominant political forces, shapes national policy and governance direction when in power. How its leadership coordinates internally determines the party's effectiveness in opposition and its capacity to mount a credible challenge in future elections.
The 2028 election cycle is already taking shape, and the NPP's ability to project stability and unity will be crucial in persuading voters to consider the party's return to government. Public perception of internal conflicts or personality clashes among party executives can undermine public confidence and weaken campaign messaging.
Additionally, the outcomes of leadership elections within the NPP—and similarly within the National Democratic Congress—often reflect broader ideological and regional dynamics within Ghana's political system. Leadership battles frequently pit different factions against one another, and their resolution matters for understanding how party machinery will function and whose interests are represented in upper echelons of governance.
The road ahead
With John Boadu's likely elevation to National Chairman and Kodua's continued role as General Secretary, observers will watch closely to see whether the stated commitment to collaboration materialises in practice. The coming months will test whether both leaders can subordinate personal ambitions to collective party goals, particularly as the NPP gears up for what is likely to be a fiercely competitive 2028 election campaign against an incumbent NDC government.
