Edward Boateng backs Boadu, Kodua to unite NPP ahead of 2028 elections
Ex-Ambassador Edward Boateng has thrown his weight behind newly elected NPP National Chairman John Boadu and re-elected General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, calling on them to lead a comprehensive party rebuilding effort ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Boateng, who previously served as Ghana's Ambassador to China, said the October 3 election results at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi carry substantial weight and responsibility. The new leadership must prioritise strengthening party structures from grassroots to national level whilst bringing together members divided by the internal contests.
Boadu's journey and mandate
Highlighting Boadu's extensive political trajectory, Boateng praised the newly elected chairman's rise through the party ranks—from polling station official to constituency organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Organiser, Acting General Secretary, General Secretary and now National Chairman. He described this as evidence of unwavering commitment and sacrifice to the NPP.
Boateng had publicly endorsed Boadu before the election, citing his institutional knowledge, temperament and listening skills as decisive factors. Boadu secured 2,888 votes, defeating Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko (2,408 votes), former National Chairman Paul Afoko (790 votes) and Sammy Crabbe (41 votes).
The former ambassador specifically referenced Boadu's previous tenure as National Organiser and Acting General Secretary between 2014 and 2016, when he contributed to rebuilding the party's machinery and supported the NPP's successful 2016 election campaign. Boateng urged Boadu to leverage this experience to promote reconciliation and ensure all party factions feel represented in rebuilding efforts.
Kodua's historic second term
Boateng also commended Kodua's decisive re-election victory with 4,486 votes, noting the General Secretary has made history as the first person since Dan Botwe to win consecutive terms in the position. This emphatic mandate, Boateng stressed, reflects delegates' confidence in Kodua's performance and vision.
He called on Kodua to partner closely with Chairman Boadu to strengthen party discipline, accountability and grassroots accessibility. Boateng emphasised the need for Kodua to reach out to members who supported other candidates, helping to heal divisions from the internal elections and fostering party unity.
Why it matters for Ghana
The NPP's internal leadership elections and subsequent calls for unity carry direct significance for Ghana's political landscape. The 2028 presidential race is already taking shape, and the ruling party's ability to rebuild trust, heal internal rifts and present a cohesive front will significantly impact both party fortunes and the national political environment.
Boateng's intervention as a respected former diplomat signals that senior party figures outside the immediate leadership contest are concerned about post-election cohesion. His emphasis on inclusivity—ensuring every tendency within the NPP has a seat at the table—reflects broader anxieties about whether internal divisions could weaken the party's position heading into the next general election campaign. The 480-vote margin between Boadu and Agyarko suggests a reasonably split party membership, making reconciliation efforts essential to prevent fractures.
For the broader Ghanaian electorate, NPP unity or disunity will shape the competitive environment in 2028. A fragmented ruling party could embolden opposition parties and influence voter behaviour, whilst a successfully rebuilt and united NPP could strengthen its electoral position. Boateng's call for the new leadership to rally behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party's flagbearer underscores the importance of internal stability to the party's broader strategic objectives.
