John Boadu Returns to Power: NPP Elects New National Chairman in Kumasi Showdown
The New Patriotic Party has a new leader at the helm following a closely contested national election. John Boadu emerged victorious in the race for National Chairman at the party's National Delegates Conference held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, with a commanding vote margin over his rivals.
Boadu polled 2,888 votes, significantly ahead of his nearest challenger Boakye Agyarko, who secured 2,408 votes. Former Chairman Paul Afoko came third with 790 votes, whilst Sammy Crabbe finished fourth with just 41 votes. The results underscored Boadu's considerable support base within the party's delegate structure, with thousands of party members converging in Kumasi to participate in the election.
A Political Comeback for Boadu
The victory represents a significant return to prominence for Boadu, who previously served as the NPP's General Secretary before stepping away from that role. His election to the chairmanship position marks his re-entry into the party's top leadership at a critical moment in Ghana's political calendar.
Speaking immediately after his victory was announced, Boadu expressed confidence in his ability to unite the party. "The party is key. For me, I don't think it will be difficult to get them on board," he remarked, signalling his intention to foster cohesion amongst party members ahead of upcoming electoral challenges.
Political observers had noted that candidate Sammy Crabbe's decision to withdraw from the race and form an alliance with Boadu may have bolstered the newly elected chairman's numbers on polling day. Such strategic withdrawals and endorsements are common in competitive party elections, often consolidating votes behind a preferred candidate.
What This Means for Ghana's Political Future
Boadu's election comes at a pivotal time for the NPP and Ghana's broader political landscape. The party now enters a reorganisation phase, with the 2028 general elections looming on the horizon. As the newly elected National Chairman, Boadu will be tasked with steering the party's strategic direction, strengthening its grassroots machinery, and positioning the NPP competitively for the next presidential and parliamentary contests.
The chairmanship election itself demonstrated the vitality of internal party democracy within the NPP, with the Kumasi gathering drawing substantial delegate participation from across the country. The keenly contested nature of the race reflected genuine competition and diverse viewpoints within the party structure.
Under Boadu's leadership, party officials and stakeholders will expect renewed focus on organisational consolidation, member engagement, and policy articulation. The success of these efforts in the coming months will significantly influence the NPP's electoral fortunes heading into 2028, particularly given the importance of internal party strength in mobilising voters and executing effective campaigns at both national and constituency levels.
