HTU Health Clinic Elevated to Primary Hospital Status Following HeFRA Inspection

The Ho Technical University (HTU) Clinic has been formally upgraded to Primary Hospital status following a comprehensive inspection by the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA), a development that underscores the institution's expanding role in healthcare delivery across the Volta Region.

The upgrade, confirmed by Volta Regional Director of HeFRA Divine Kporha, represents a significant progression for the facility, which began as a simple Sick Bay before evolving into a comprehensive health clinic serving both the university community and the broader public. This recognition by Ghana's health regulator reflects the facility's demonstrated capacity and commitment to meeting national healthcare standards.

Growing Healthcare Capacity

The numbers tell a compelling story of institutional growth and public trust. In 2025 alone, the facility recorded 24,846 Out-Patient Department attendances, 1,500 antenatal care visits, 154 deliveries, and 1,633 child welfare clinic attendances. More remarkably, the facility achieved a historic milestone by successfully delivering triplets in 2026—the first such case in its operational history, demonstrating the clinical competence of its medical team.

According to Mr Kporha, the upgrade reflects not merely the facility's past performance but also its increasing utilisation and public confidence. The steady growth in patient numbers and service delivery indicates that the Ho community increasingly views HTU's health facility as a reliable healthcare provider, reducing pressure on other facilities in the municipality.

He highlighted that primary hospital status would strengthen HTU's ability to respond effectively to healthcare demands of both the university and surrounding residents.

The facility's progression from Sick Bay to Clinic to Primary Hospital reflects deliberate institutional commitment to healthcare excellence.
