Ghana Medical Trust Fund bolsters Ho Teaching Hospital ties to expand specialist care in Volta Region

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has moved to strengthen its working relationship with Ho Teaching Hospital, signalling a significant step towards expanding specialist healthcare services across the Volta Region. The strategic engagement, led by GMTF Administrator Adjoa Obuobia Opoku-Darko, focused on deepening collaboration and addressing operational challenges as the Fund scales up its programmes nationwide.

The meeting reviewed the performance of the Fund's pilot initiative, which successfully provided financial support to 50 patients dealing with chronic and life-threatening conditions. Both institutions identified key areas for improvement, particularly around streamlining the GMTFcare digital platform, expediting claims processing and reimbursement, and enhancing overall service delivery mechanisms. These operational refinements are critical as the Fund prepares to expand its reach beyond its initial pilot phase.

The cardiology centre initiative

A highlight of the discussions was progress towards establishing a specialised Cardiology Centre in the Volta Region, a commitment made by President John Dramani Mahama. Officials explored practical implementation strategies, resource requirements and how the facility would integrate with Ho Teaching Hospital's existing specialist services. The proposed centre represents a significant investment in addressing cardiovascular disease management in the region, where access to such specialised care has historically been limited.

Minister for Roads and Highways Kwame Governs Agbodza has demonstrated personal commitment to the project by donating three months of his salary towards its construction. This gesture underscores the political will backing the initiative and reflects broader government efforts to decentralise specialist healthcare services beyond major urban centres like Accra and Kumasi.

The endorsement from local parliamentary representatives—Ho Central Member of Parliament Richmond Edem Kpotosu and Ketu North Member of Parliament Edem Agbana—underscores regional political support for these healthcare initiatives.
