Government bears full responsibility for Accra flooding crisis – Bawumia aide

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia campaign team, has accused the government of bearing full responsibility for Accra's recurring flooding problem, rejecting suggestions that the crisis stems from public indiscipline or poor sanitation habits.

Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, Mr Aboagye argued that whilst some citizens may contribute to sanitation challenges, ultimate accountability lies with the state. He contended that government has failed both in preventing floods and in mounting effective disaster response when incidents occur. "To try and use the indiscipline of a few as a cover for leadership failure is unacceptable," he stated, insisting the government must be held fully accountable.

Mr Aboagye highlighted that the government itself had previously acknowledged responsibility for flooding through the establishment of an anti-flood task force. "Why did you form that anti-flood task force? It means that you acknowledge that it is your responsibility," he said, pointing out that recent flooding episodes resulting in deaths and property destruction demonstrate failure in both prevention and emergency response efforts.

He stressed that effective leadership ensures all citizens, including those who behave irresponsibly, can coexist within a functioning society. "Leadership exists precisely because not all citizens behave responsibly," he noted, adding that governance must prevent the majority from suffering due to the actions of a few.
